Sloane Hartwell (b. 1992, Chicago, Illinois) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Driggs, Idaho. Growing up in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington D.C., she works across painting, sculpture, and performance. She is best known for her patina paintings on metal canvases, sculptural additions that extend her paintings into three dimensions, and immersive installations incorporating performance, found objects and site-specific elements.

Hartwell’s work explores the complexities of human experience, juxtaposing themes of trauma, resilience, and identity with an acute observation of the natural world. Influenced by her transition from an urban upbringing to life in the American West, her art reflects a tension between opposing forces—structure and spontaneity, chaos and serenity. Her Contemporary Western Series (2021–2024) pays homage to the landscapes she inhabits, magnifying intricate details found in rock formations, waterways, and shifting terrains to create a dialogue between the personal and the environmental.

Sloane Hartwell has exhibited nationally and internationally, with notable shows including Zugzwang (Freiburg, Germany, 2013), I Am The Mare (Syracuse, New York, 2014), and Ripples on the Teton (Tetonia, Idaho, 2023). Her work has been featured in the Western Design Conference (Jackson Hole, Wyoming, 2024) and St. Johns Hospital Artist Close Up (Jackson Hole, Wyoming, 2024). Hartwell’s pieces are held in private collections across Virginia, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Maryland, Philadelphia, Idaho, and Wyoming. She has participated in various residencies and public art events, including the Salem Art Works Intercollegiate Iron Pour (2011, 2012) and the Snowscapes Snow Sculpture Competition (2017–2024).
